El programa de investigación e innovación de la UE, known as Horizonte 2020, runs from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of almost 80 billion euros. It has made a significant contribution to building a knowledge-based and innovative society and economy. The program allowed for a quick response to COVID-19, Ebola, and Zika outbreaks, and notably contributed to climate science. Every euro spent on the program will ultimately result in five euros of benefits for EU citizens by 2040, demonstrating the high return on investment in research and innovation for European society.
Horizonte 2020 funded over 35,000 projects over seven years, with calls attracting over a million individual applications from 177 countries. The program played a crucial role in the fight against climate change, with 64.4% of its budget invested in sustainable development. It also supported significant growth in employment and revenue for participating companies, as well as contributing to the mobility and improvement of researchers’ abilities and knowledge. The final evaluation of Horizonte 2020 provides key insights and lessons learned that will shape the current implementation of Horizonte Europa and influence the development of policies for future research and innovation initiatives.
